Frightening Films

Costumes, candy, and scary movies immediately come to mind as soon as September ends. Whether you’re a scary movie fanatic, or you’re scared of your own shadow, you can still join in on the fun by watching Halloween movies. Some movies will make your spine tingle, and some will bring out your inner child, but as long as they get you into the Halloween spirit, tune in and beware.

Halloweentown

This Halloween season, if you’re looking to go back to your scary movie roots, then the perfect film for you is “Halloweentown.” This classic Disney movie follows Marnie Piper (Kimberly Brown,) a young girl who has just found out she is a witch. After making this discovery, she follows her grandmother back to a town full of supernatural creatures known as Halloweentown. When Marnie finds out the town is in danger, she does everything in her power to save it. “Halloweentown” is the first film of a four movie series that began in 1998. This Halloween film is perfect for those that want to reminisce a simpler time.

Halloween

For the hardcore horror lover, look no further than the 1978 classic, “Halloween.” This is the horror movie that started it all. Director John Carpenter created the trend of the modern horror film with this classic. From the soundtrack to the iconic mask, everything about this movie is horrifying. A young Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Laurie Strode, an innocent teenage girl who has no clue about her family’s dark past. The original masked murder Michael Myers is her older brother, and has come back to his home town to take revenge on the one victim that he let get away. “Halloween” is the perfect old-school movie that will leave you wondering if the boogeyman is real.

Scream

This horror series illustrates the perfect mix of a mystery/thriller movie. Beginning in 1996 the main character Sydney, played by Neve Campbell, is followed film after film by a stalker that picks up where the last one left off. Each movie gives you a new cast, and leaves you guessing which one of them is the murderer. After each death, you get closer to figuring out who it is. This four movie series pokes fun at all the other horror films and leaves you with one dying question, “What’s your favorite scary movie?”

The Purge

This modern day thriller that came out in 2013 takes place in the near future. The United States has become the perfect country, with the unemployment rate down and crime at an all-time low. However, all of this comes with a price. For one night every year, there are no laws. No law enforcement, no emergency services, and everything is legal. For those doing the hunting, this is the perfect set up. However, if you’re being hunted, you better run and hide. The film takes place in the mansion of a rich family, when “Purgers” invade their home and are prepared to attack. Normally safe from the purge, this family must band together in order to survive the 12 hour period. For those that love to be kept on the edge of their seats, this movie is the one to watch.

The Conjuring

This 2013 paranormal film is based on the horrifying true story of the Perron family. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, are called in to investigate a farmhouse that has been cursed by many different spirits. They must work to figure out what the ghosts are possessing, and why they are there. For supernatural horror gurus, this modern-day classic is a must-see. However, this terrifying film should be watched with caution as it is not for the faint of heart.

The Addams Family

Your grandparents may have watched this famous family while they were on TV, but the big screen debut of “The Addams Family” is one that no Halloween enthusiast should miss. This 1991 film follows the Addamses as they celebrate the return of Gomez Addams’ long lost brother, Uncle Fester. Though joyous about his return, the family can’t deny that there is something off with Fester, who doesn’t appear to be the man they have missed for so long. The film, which kick started the career of Christina Ricci, is full of spooks and just the right amount of laughs to make you fall in love with the kooky family.

Hocus Pocus

The scariest witches of the 90s were undoubtedly the Sanderson sisters of “Hocus Pocus.” This movie re-runs on Disney channel every October, allowing it to achieve cult status over the years. Starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, the film tells the tale of three evil witches who were accidently summoned by a teenage boy attempting to impress his crush, on Halloween of course. With the witches on a mission to suck the souls out of all the children they can find, it’s up to Max Dennison, his little sister Dani and Allison (his crush) to save their town before the witches can ruin the holiday. This 1993 flick may seem less scary now that you aren’t in elementary school, but the ridiculous costumes and overall positive message make it a quintessential Halloween movie.
