Filled with clubs, performances, and candy, Freshmen Remix helped kick off the second semester for freshmen. For freshmen who were not able to get involved in clubs and other extracurricular activities at the beginning of the year, the Jan. 14th Freshman Remix was an opportunity to get back into the game.

The Diamond Bar High School Link Crew planned event worked to help freshmen get further involved through activities, performances, and speeches. Clubs used booths to advertise their causes and activities, and encouraged the students to get involved. Booths that advertised clubs like Math Team, Drama, Pencils of Promise, Anime Club, R.E.D., Interact, and Girls League lined the gym. They provided information on their club, and explained how to sign up, and become part of the group.

For freshmen who may have missed club rush or tryouts for groups in the beginning of the year or even over the summer, Freshmen Remix gives them the opportunity to join something they are passionate about,” said Link Crew officer Linda He via Facebook.

Some club booths even had interesting games to play to get the attention of the students. Math Team, for example, presented four cards from a deck, and challenged the students to use any equation or operation to get the number 24. Other games included a pencil and bracelet ring toss from Pencils of Promise, a club that is focused on education access for those in need. R.E.D., a club designed to help prevent human trafficking, handed Kit-Kat chocolate bars to those who signed up. Many other clubs also offered chips and lollipops to encourage students to join.

The Marvel themed event started out with several performances. The dance team, drama department, Cheer, Song, Drumline, and All Male members presented their talents to the freshmen sitting in the bleachers. The act by All Male, the “Les Miserables” scene presented by Drama, and the other performances engaged the audience, as they cheered and clapped along.

Link Crew and USB members dressed up as superheroes that further enhanced the Marvel atmosphere. The “heroes” joked around, and introduced the groups with their superhero banter. The gym was filled with other Marvel related posters and decorations.

“We wanted to choose a theme that showcase what Diamond Bar has to offer to freshmen. This year, officers decided on “The Avengers” rather than reuse the theme last year, which was “Toy Story” and fitting in as a new toy. We played with the idea of recruits aka the freshmen, and tried to recruit them to different clubs or performing groups on campus!” He said via Facebook.
The GLCs and USB President David Song gave encouraging lectures between the performances. They explained the importance of standing out, and prompted every student to get involved in the school. They also discussed the athletic teams, and told the freshmen how they could still get involved.

We also had an awesome list of performers: pep, dance company, drumline, and drama. Freshmen Remix came out amazing!” He said via Facebook. “Many clubs were able to advertise to Freshmen, who hopefully found something they were passionate about.”
