Chelò whips up cool desserts

If you’re looking for a dessert shop with an aesthetically pleasing environment and flavorful desserts, Chelò Creamery is definitely a must try. The small, hipster creamery has a huge variety of unique desserts and adorable decorations.

I have made my way to this Italian ice/ice cream gelato store several times since its opening this summer. Being moderately busy with a welcoming atmosphere and a straightforward menu, the shop consistently has made me come back and try more.

The creamery is small, but the environment is cheerful and inviting. The walls are covered with decorations and artsy quotes, and each table is completed with fluffy chairs and a small cactus as its centerpiece. Understandably busier on weekend nights, the store was filled with customers, although the line moved fast.

Every time I have been to Chelò, the uncommon flavors and combinations prompted me to choose something different. Interesting flavors such as milk tea, cookie butter, and banana cream have induced me to ask for several samples before I decided what to order. Many of the gelato and Italian ice flavors change throughout the weeks, depending on what flavors seem to be popular with customers. The store also offers shaved snow with different drinks, and a variety of waffles.

Among my favorites is the Guava Cobbler gelato. The creamy ice cream tastes vaguely like raspberry cheesecake, with a rich cakey texture, but with a strong dash of fruity flavoring. It paired well with the custard inside the crispy waffle cone, or on a warm mochi waffle.

Recently, the creamery added Chelò Rolls to its menu. This dessert consisted of frozen rolls of ice cream, made by pouring a melted ice cream mixture onto a frozen metal plate and scraping it into roll-like shapes. There are delightful signature flavors and combinations, including a sea salt caramel mix, and a strawberry cheesecake option. Each signature is complete with toppings like chocolate drizzle, Oreo crumbles, caramel, and fruit. Each order of the Chelò Rolls takes about four minutes to make; on busier days, the wait for this unique dessert may be a bit longer. The toppings on the rolls complimented the dessert, and the signature choices create distinctive and tasty blends of flavors.

I also enjoyed their Italian ice with custard, which is quickly becoming a popular dessert combination. Their fruity Italian ice was astonishingly flavorful, and reminded me of a Jolly Rancher hard candy. Each bite was refreshing and the distinctive tang never failed to surprise me. It paired well with their custard, which had a pretty standard and sweet creamy taste. The store allowed me to combine different Italian ice flavors, resulting in different mixtures of flavored ices like lychee, rose, green apple, and watermelon. My only complaint was that the custard to ice ratio in this dessert was a little off, having not enough velvety custard for every bite of fruity ice.

All in all, Chelò Creamery is definitely an ice cream shop that will pique the interest of anyone who’s looking for a unique and tasty dessert experience. With a pleasant environment and a plethora of delicious options, this creamery is certain to leave you wanting to come back for more.
