DB advances in CIF with 63-29 win over Downey

The 2013 season is not over yet for the Brahmas. The underdog Diamond Bar football team upset the highly favored CIF reigning champs Downey Vikings 63-29. With an overall record of 7-4, the Brahmas will now face the La Serna Lancers Friday at home.

The Brahmas took advantage of their first possession of the game as junior quarterback and co-captain Tyler Peterson threw a 15-yard pass to senior running back Tyron Kelley to take a 7-0 lead. After giving up a safety on its next possession, DB scored on a 60-yard run by senior running back and co-captain Tyler Brown.

However, the Vikings struck back, scoring 13 unanswered points in the first quarter. Down 15-14, the Brahmas marched down the field to their one-yard line when Peterson ran across the goal plain to give the Brahmas the lead.  Peterson finished the game with 222 passing yards on 22 completions.

With two minutes left in the second half, Brown had a spectacular touchdown run of 49 yards, increasing the Brahmas lead to 28-14. The 5’8 starting running back had an exceptional game with 298 rushing yards on 19 attempts along with 103 receiving yards.

The second half was all Brahmas as the team never gave up the lead.  Brown later scored on 43-yard and 76-yard touchdown runs, just making it harder for the Vikings to come back. With the final score of 63-29, the Brahmas showed they were not satisfied with just making the playoffs, their first in ten years. In 2003, DB lost to future NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez’s Mission Viejo team.

In the second round, the Brahmas will face La Serna, who defeated the Burroughs Indians 55-7. The game will have a lot of emotion for the Brahmas because it will be debut of Antonio Hull, who was suspended for the regular season under CIF transfer regulations.
