Finding Success in Higher Education

Diamond Bar High School is proud to announce a significant achievement within its faculty. Nicolle Flores, one of the esteemed deans at DBHS, has recently earned her doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of La Verne. This accomplishment not only marks a personal milestone for Flores but also signifies a new chapter in her professional journey.

Flores’s decision to pursue a doctorate in organizational leadership was driven by her aspiration to expand her professional horizons. Any organization that requires a form of leadership provides Flores the ability to apply for that position. This could mean anywhere from helping non-profit organizations to a leadership position in the medical field, and everything else in between.
“This degree presented more options for me in my professional future,” Flores said. “Whether I decide to remain in education or explore opportunities outside the field, this degree equips me with the necessary leadership skills to excel.”

The journey towards earning her doctorate was both challenging and rewarding. Over a rigorous three-year period, Flores delved into the complexities of leadership theories and practices while simultaneously fulfilling her responsibilities as a staff member at DBHS. Reflecting on this experience, Flores emphasizes the significance of effective time management.
“Balancing work duties, family responsibilities, and doctoral studies was undoubtedly challenging,” Flores says. “Time management was the most difficult aspect of the program.”

Prior to her role as a dean, Flores had a rich background in education. Her journey began with a second career in education after leaving the music and video production industry due to an injury. With a passion for teaching and helping others, she pursued a teaching credential and master’s program, laying the foundation for her 22-year career in education.

Flores’s teaching experiences have been extensive and varied. She spent a decade as a high school classroom teacher before transitioning to roles as a master teacher, college administrator, middle school teacher, and English Language Development (ELD) coordinator. Three years ago, she jumped at a chance for a position in the Walnut Valley Unified School District, where she currently serves as an instructional dean.

In her current role, Flores oversees English, ELD, visual and performing arts, world languages, and the wellness center, supervising approximately 46 teachers and instructional aids. She is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and connected to their education.

“I think part of that is cultural awareness, racial awareness, identity awareness, bringing those types of things to our campus is something that really speaks to my heart and my passion.” Flores said. “Today’s world is very different than it was, say, when I was growing up and when I was going to school. I think students today are presented with so many more challenges than certainly I ever had to experience”.

Flores also emphasizes the importance of personal and professional growth, encouraging students to embrace the journey with courage, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning. When asked about her advice for students considering pursuing higher education, PhDs, or leadership roles in the future, Flores passionately advocates for taking the leap. Drawing from her own educational journey and experiences, she emphasizes the profound personal and professional growth that comes from pursuing advanced degrees.
“Definitely do it. It is one of the most personally and professionally gratifying things you can do. Pursuing advanced degrees will push you to your limits, helping you realize your full capacity and potential,” Flores said. “It’s about your stamina, your perseverance, and your courage to step into that place and say, ‘I can do this, and I’m ready,’ even if it takes several years. What you get out of it is immeasurable. So I would say, do it for sure”.

Dr. Nicolle Flores’ journey from a high school teacher to an instructional dean with a doctorate in organizational leadership is a testament to her passion for education and commitment to student success. As she continues to inspire and empower both students and staff, her impact at Diamond Bar High School will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
