DBHS Dance Co’s steps of serenity

The Spring Dance Concert left the audience in awe with its captivating choreography and the dancers’ passionate performances, making it an evening to cherish. An event aimed to combine talents across the school in one spectacular event to spread the joy that comes with the concept of dancing.

This event was a culmination of a goal of bringing together all the forms of dance classes across campus, showcasing the hard work and dedication that everyone put in over the year and being able to present their absolute best. Managed and coordinated by DBHS’s Dance Teacher Ms. Jill Riley, the event was made as a way to showcase the styles of music and dance that had shifted throughout different time periods.

The concert featured work from all the different dance departments, such as: Beginning Dance, Intermediate Dance Ensemble, Advanced Performance Dance, and the DB Dance Company. Both students and teachers were tasked with choosing and creating music pieces that were tailored to each specific time period.

This event helps bring together people and directors from different classes and fields, using their skills in order to perfect the event and give it a true sense of professionalism

“I worked closely with our Technical Director, Mr. Jacob Kaitz who does some of our lighting design and manages basically everything in the theater. I also worked with Stagecraft Director Riley as we gave opportunities to her stagecraft students to create lighting for some of the student choreography pieces,” Ms. Jill Riley said.

Many students played major roles in performing their part and contributing to the ultimate overall success to the concert. Mckenzie Wong, a freshman, explains the multiple rehearsals that took place in order to prepare. Some rehearsals only went over a few quick moments, while others included the entire concert rehearsal in one take.

“There was a lot of preparation behind it,” Wong said. “Since we had to audition for every dance, it was a pretty long process.”

Of course, an event like this would come with its own set of challenges and obstacles, specifically as each individual student was tasked with several sets of choreography and dance sets. As each student was given multiple roles to memorize and perform, having to practice when time is available was crucial during this period.

“Managing, having said yes to a lot of the dances, led to having about five this concert,” senior Chase Stalwart said. “So I did overcome them, and I did practice a lot at home so I would know all of the choreography.”

This event provided lots of benefits to its participants, mostly through the form of experience and widening their perspective on the specific aspects that take place when relating to our school’s dance related events.

“It definitely helped me gain having to juggle multiple things at once, as well as getting me a lot more friends and making me a better dancer,” Stalwart said.

The DBHS Spring Dance Concert helped shed light on a specific aspect of our school, showcasing to the audience the abilities our school has when dabbling in the field of dance.
