After a preseason filled with a mix of wins and losses, the Diamond Bar High School softball team has commenced league play with victories against Walnut and Rowland and hopes to carry their momentum into the end of the regular season and the playoffs.
The team currently sits at a 10-7 overall record and 4-2 league record, which sets the Brahmas in third place in the Hacienda League with three league matches left in the season.
Standout players who have contributed greatly to the team’s success so far have been seniors Mikaya Griego, Kaitlyn Gomez, Caitlin Esteves and junior Natalie Kim.
The team credits much of their success to their strong batting lineup, which has provided crucial hits in much-needed moments to propel them to victory. Additionally, their ability to communicate efficiently both on and off the field has proven useful in preparing for important matches and fostering a sense of team camaraderie.
“In past years our team hasn’t really played for each other on the field but this year we all want to win for each other,” Gomez said via Instagram. “We have all come up with clutch hits in big games.”
Despite these strengths, the team still sees room for improvement in various aspects of their name, notably their mental fortitude.
“I believe a weakness we have is our focus,” Gomez said. “We tend to get distracted in between games. But as the season has gone on, I’ve noticed a big improvement in focus, especially since league has started.”
To improve upon these weaknesses and help the team accomplish their goals, they are constantly implementing drills into their practices to better prepare themselves for any situations that may occur during matches.
“I’m hoping we make it to CIF and are able to make it further than I have [in previous years],” Griego said via Instagram. “It’s my last year here with the Brahmas [and] I really want to get the most out of it.”
The Brahmas will play their next league match on April 18 against South Hills.
