After months of competition, the girls tennis team has come back with a 9-2 league record that has propelled them to CIF semifinals.
Following the previous season’s setbacks, the Brahmas earned their best league record in years, which has given them both the experience and skills they needed to make it far in CIF. In tennis, there are two CIF competitions: Team CIF and Individual CIF. The team qualified for team CIF with their 9-2 League record. So they now must defeat the top high schools in their surrounding Leagues.
“I’m really excited now that we qualify for CIF this year, and I’m happy to go,” sophomore singles player Allison Ha said.
The team’s first CIF game was Nov. 1, against Vista Del Lago High School, and the team made many bold moves, pulling out a 13-5 win. Before the game, two of their varsity players, Allison Ha and Grace Lu became injured, leading Navarro to select two JV players, Olivia Sun and Jewel Mutuc to fill in. This decision paid off, as Olivia Sun paired up with varsity player Jasmine Buenafe to win all three of their matches. In singles, varsity number one player, Kaitlyn Shuffer, was successful winning all three sets, 6-0.
“As long as you take it point by point, you’ll have the outcome you want,” Shuffer said.
The team’s second round of CIF was on Nov. 3 against Quartz Hills High School. Confidence from winning their first round assisted the team in their 14-4 win, taking them straight to the quarterfinals. Last Monday, the team beat Bolsa Grande High School 12-6, qualifying them for semifinals. Their winning streak came to an end on November 8th , when they lost their semifinal game against California Academy of Math and Science 5-13.
Though the team lost, it was a triumphant season that will be in the history books forever.
