Finding wins through struggling season

After a rough start, Diamond Bar girls water polo regained their footing, racking up their first three wins in recent games.
In one of their recent tournaments at Western High School, they struggled when facing four different schools. The Lady Brahmas lost all four games, 20-5 against Arcadia, 11-3 against Mission Viejo, 17-5 against Redondo Union and 14-8 against Torrance.
However, they shifted momentum with a 20-4 win against Wilson in their most recent league game on Jan. 11 and an 8-6 win against Los Altos on Jan. 4. “We have shown much improvement throughout the season. Being able to work out technique issues and utilizing practice to learn different set-ups for both offense and defense [has been helpful],” senior Nichole Arancibia said.
Sophomore Vanna Xiao has been benching weights and working hard by honing her skills in the pool, along with her sister sophomore Lanna Xiao. The team is preparing for the upcoming game against Walnut on Jan. 25.
According to Xiao, they believe they are lacking in speed and shooting power, so they are working hard to hone those skills.
“We’ve also been doing more scrimmages which has helped many of the girls to get used to an intense and fast-paced game,” Arancibia said. “This has also improved spatial awareness and accuracy of the passes we make.”
