BIDEN, SANDERS VIE FOR NOMINATION
Former Vice President Joe Biden has taken the lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. As of mid-March, Biden has 890 delegates while Sanders has 736, with 1,991 delegates needed to win the nomination. The two met on March 15 at CNN’s studio in Washington D.C. for an audience-free debate, which was moved from Phoenix as a precaution for the coronavirus.
WEINSTEIN FACES CONVICTION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES
Former film producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years of prison by a New York State Supreme Court Judge on March 11. Weinstein will serve 20 years for criminal sexual act in the first degree and three years for rape in the third degree. However, he was acquitted of two predatory sexual assault charges that would have sentenced him for life.
TRUCE SUSPENDS FIGHTING IN SYRIA’S 9-YEAR CIVIL WAR
After fighting intensified in the northwestern Syria, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president, have agreed to hold a ceasefire on March 5. Through the agreement, they hope to establish a security corridor and prevent the country’s humanitarian crisis from worsening.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS VIEW EU CLIMATE LAW AS INSUFFICIENT
The European Union proposed a new climate law on March 4 that calls for its 27 member states to commit to reaching zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Climate activist Greta Thunberg and other environmental groups have criticized the European Climate Law, emphasizing that more action was needed to address urgent climate issues in the present rather than in 30 years.
U.S. TROOPS PERMANENTLY WITHDRAW FROM AFGHANISTAN
Following the U.S.-Taliban agreement on Feb. 29, American troops have begun withdrawing from Afghanistan. These troops will not be replaced, and the long-term goal is to remove all of the U.S. troops from the country within 14 months.
