Girl golfers advance in state competition

The Diamond Bar High School girls golf team continued to shoot like champions as they captured first place in the qualifier for the Southern California Championship today, defeating Troy High School by two strokes.

In addition, after a two-hole playoff, junior Emma Han become the CIF Individual champion.

On Monday, the team won the Southern Team Divisional with a score of 374, the team’s fourth CIF title in a row. Senior Esther Lee led the Brahmas shooting par.

“We are playing our best right now and getting ready for CIF as a team to win our seventh CIF title in the last eight years today,” coach Tony McCabe said before the match. “We are right on track to make it to state this year.”

The team will compete in the state semifinals on Nov. 14 in Pasadena.

Last Tuesday, Angelica Kusnowo and Han went to CIF Divisionals at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills to compete to become finalists. Kusnowo shot three under par, tying for fifth place in a field of 130 athletes. She last won this playoff when she was a freshman. Han took 36th place by shooting one over par.

The team finished with an overall record of 10-2 in the regular season, only losing to Troy twice.

In tournaments and various competitions, the team came on top nearly every time, placing first in the Chapper Wheeler Tournament on Sept. 5 and 6, the San Clemente Rainbow Sandal Tournament on Sept. 23, the Freelance Tournament on Oct. 22 and CIF Individual Divisional on Oct. 27.

In the Ayala Tournament on Oct. 7, the Lady Brahmas also placed first in the competition with an overall score of 400, 27 points ahead of second place Torrance High School.
Kusnowo took the runner up for shooting a 76 while junior captain Alicia Kuo took fourth overall with a 79.

“Our players are all very strong and competitive this year; we are well off to come out on top at state,” Kusnowo said.
