From harmonizing on stage to stopping runs on the field, enior catcher Yuri Song demonstrates her duality, bringing excellence to both athletics and performing arts. Song takes a step further towards her softball career, committing to Pitzer College’s softball program while also acknowledging the impact of her musical endeavors.
Song picked up her first softball mitt in the fourth grade, progressing as a player by playing competitively on a travel team as well as representing Diamond Bar as number two on the field since her freshman year. Through it all, she has developed a strong passion for the sport.
Song has always envisioned softball as part of her future, working hard toward her goal of playing at the collegiate level. Throughout the process, she has built meaningful relationships that have pushed her toward her goal of playing at the collegiate level. It is through the immense inspiration from her teammates that has helped her make her decision of pursuing an athletic career in college.
“I think it’s just a community that I saw, especially with my travel team,” Song said. “They’re really inspiring people.”
Song’s talent and passion on the field is prevalent on the stage as well. Growing up in a musically inclined family, Song has been singing since a very young age. She joined her first choir in the fourth grade, the same year she picked up the sport of softball. As her softball career continued to evolve, so did her interest in the performing arts. This year marks Song’s ninth year pursuing choir, and her fourth year performing as a Brahma. She believes her commitment to choir has been pivotal in her opportunity to commit to Pitzer College.
“I’ve done a lot in [show choir],” Song said. “I’m a student artistic director, and I’m on the choir board, which I think helped me write good essays and helped with getting me committed.”
Throughout her high school career, Song has made a significant impact on Diamond Bar’s choir program, particularly through her leadership in the advanced show choir, Marquis, and her creation of the acapella group “Trillions”.
Balancing both athletics and performing arts as well as staying on top of academics, Song emphasizes the importance of communication as well as trusting your community. She has effectively managed her schedule by maintaining open lines of communication with teachers, coaches, and peers. She also emphasizes the effectiveness of simply reaching out to her peers.
“They can do a lot of things you don’t have the time to do,” Song said.
While she explored many Division I schools, Song found Pitzer to be the ideal fit for her aspirations.
“They say this with every commit, but I think it’s true that you commit to a school that you don’t expect to,” Song said. “The campus really just took me by surprise, and I love the team and the coaches. It just felt like home out of all the schools.”
As Song prepares for her senior season, she looks forward to bringing her leadership skills to Pitzer College following her graduation. With several other decorated commits joining Pitzer’s softball program, their collective goal is to elevate the team and pursue conference titles. Additionally, Song is eager to explore new activities and interests beyond those that she pursued in high school.
