Shattering both barriers and stage curtains, students from Glendora and Walnut Valley high schools came together for a day of theatrical exploration and performance at the much-anticipated “Places!” Theater Collaboration event. The collaboration, aimed at fostering creativity and camaraderie among budding young actors and theater enthusiasts, proved to be a resounding success.
The event was established and organized by DBHS’s drama director, Jacob Kaitz, in order for students from various school’s drama departments to collaborate. There was also a friendly competition in the background that consisted of four main categories with prizes: monologue, musical theater solo, scene, and musical theater duet and trio.
The day kicked off with an array of singing and acting auditions, where students showcased their talents in front of a panel of judges.
“I mainly went to the collab to try out new things because I was interested in doing the different workshops available,” Diamond Bar High School junior Jasmine Chen said. “We were able to choose to do workshops ranging from more than 5 specific fields of theater all free of cost.”
Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of theater-related workshops facilitated by seasoned professionals. From Broadway Q&A sessions to improv workshops, wig styling, teching, and dance classes, there was something interesting for everyone to experience and enjoy.
Many explain the enjoyment and knowledge that they received from being able to witness and participate in such workshops. One of those participants is Natalie Tsai, who says that her favorite moment was being able to attend the musical theater dance workshop.
“One of my personal favorite moments was when I was acknowledged with an award at the end of the musical theater dance workshop by the choreographer, who was a professional choreographer/dancer on broadway.” Tsai said. “I felt so honored to receive acknowledgement from such a talented individual and choreographer.”
The workshops not only provided valuable insights and practical skills but also served as a platform for students to connect with industry experts and fellow enthusiasts.
“I learned a lot that day from theater professionals and was inspired to try to continue to pursue theater after high school,” Chen said. “I also learned how collaborative and fun improv could be as that was one of the most laughter-filled and engaging hours of my life.”
As the day drew to a close, the collaboration was marked by a captivating presentation featuring the talents of those who auditioned the best. The audience was treated to a spectacular showcase of singing, acting, and dancing.
Ultimately, the “Places! Theater Collaboration” proved to be a memorable and enriching experience for all involved. It not only provided students with the opportunity to hone their skills and express their creativity, but also form a sense of community and camaraderie among the participating schools.
“I think our goals were to foster new friendships and connections between the students from these different schools and inspire each other through our performances,” Tsai said.
