Starting off this season with their first defeat since 2019, the Diamond Bar High School boys golf team has since gained momentum after a tough loss following a five year winning streak.
The Purple and Gold are currently 7-2 in league face offs and aiming to earn another tally in their win column by the end of the week to bring their overall record to 8-2.
Junior Samson Li led the team to victory against South Hills High School, performing well with a score of three under par, meaning he shot three under the predetermined proficiency level for the gold round.
“As a team I feel like we could’ve done a lot better because we made a lot of lazy mistakes and we felt too comfortable and laid back, but we still won 215-194,” Li said.
Leading up to the golf season, many varsity players, like sophomore Maxwell Huang, practiced four days a week by going to the infamous high tech shooting range, Top Golf, or practicing techniques at home. Additionally, up-and-coming junior Michael Xiong has shown major improvement after his first two years on junior varsity and is now an important asset to the varsity team.
“This year, specifically, I’ve seen a lot of improvement in me and my teammates. I have never practiced this much for a season which was definitely more tiring but it made me better,” Huang said.
The golf team started this year’s season slowly, but they have since gone into full swing, playing multiple games per week along with occasional tournament competitions throughout the season. Besides their unfortunate loss against Walnut, the team has been victorious throughout the rest of their season.
“This season I feel I didn’t perform as well as I know I could have, and the whole season I feel like as a team we should get our mental game up and clean up because I feel like we play sloppy sometimes.” Huang said.
These boys will face off against Wilson High School today at the Mountain Meadows Golf Course.
