The Diamond Bar High School baseball team swings their way toward a hopeful season after collecting back-to-back pre-season wins against Baldwin Park and Monrovia.
On Feb. 27, the boys entered their matchup against the previously undefeated CIF Division II team of Monrovia with a 2-3 overall record as a CIF Division VI team. After a nine-inning game, the Brahmas emerged victorious, with a final score of 8-1, breaking Monrovia’s undefeated record.
“These wins were a good opportunity for them to see what this offense can be about,” head coach David Lopez said.
Coaching a relatively young team, Lopez’s main goal for this season is to manufacture as many runs as possible. Offensive philosophy was a major focal point during the team’s preseason. The team’s proactive attitude toward refining their offensive tactics during the offseason has paid off in their early triumphs this season. In preparation for the upcoming league matches, the team conducts various offensive batting drills.
Baseball started league strong, with a major victory against Rowland 9-0 at home and 22-8 away. Despite these momentous wins, the Brahmas fell short to Walnut the following week. The Brahmas played a very tight game, with a final score of 1-2 on the road, followed by another close 3-5 loss at home.
“We’re working together a lot,” senior pitcher Jonathan (JJ) Smith said. “Just compared to last year it’s a different dynamic of the team, we’re all playing for a team and not really ourselves anymore.”
During the offseason, the team had to make significant changes to their roster after graduating 14 seniors last year. Camaraderie and teamwork were essential in overcoming the challenges of a new roster as well as maintaining focus on collective goals.
With an overall record of 8-8 and 3-3 in league, the Brahmas will next play Wilson away on April 18.
