After a memorable junior season for Diamond Bar football, now senior, Brian Vu is hungry for more. Contributing to offense, defense, and special teams, Vu averaged 50 yards per game and 1 touchdowns with 13 receptions so far this season. He also averaged 10 tackles with 3.3 tackles per game on defense.
Prior to his high school career, Vu was introduced to football through his friends. It was being able to play with those friends after school, being part of a tight-knit team and getting to enjoy victories with his team, that would make him fall in love with the game.
“At first we were playing in 8th grade,” said Vu. “We just used to go to the park and then that’s how I started playing football.”
Going into the fall with high confidence, Vu will help lead a team consisting mainly of returners from last year’s varsity team. Several in this year’s roster are playing their final year of high school football, along with other returners from last year’s varsity squad. Despite this, Vu was ultimately chosen as one of the team captains for the Brahmas.
“We felt pretty good about our team because we have a lot of returning players as seniors,” Vu said. “So most of our team are seniors, but everyone on the team is close together. We’re all pretty strong and we have a lot of good returning players.”
Vu has earned recognition throughout his football career at Diamond Bar. He has played for a two-time league championship-winning team, and receiving the honorary title of Hacienda League MVP last season.
“I played really well last my junior year,” Vu said. “Sophomore year I played on varsity and last year I played, I had a breakout season.”
Despite his numerous accolades as a part of Diamond Bar Football, Vu has overcome many setbacks before savoring the success. Battling through illness and injuries, Vu did not let those setbacks deter him.
“If something bad happens, just have a short-term memory,” Vu said. “Don’t let the bad things get caught up in your mind. Like you just have to have a quick memory and just forget about it and then move on.”
As the football season progresses, Vu hopes to leave a lasting legacy on Diamond Bar Football. He hopes to contribute to this year’s team by scoring touchdowns and interceptions.Vu is confident that they can win a CIF title this season.
“I’m really excited for this season,” Vu said. “We’re going to do really [well]. Our team is on the smaller side but we play really hard. I feel like we’re going to win this year and we are going to have a strong season.”
Although Vu has yet to receive any official college offers, he is currently in contact with several coaches both in the area and on the East Coast. As for life after Football, Vu hopes to enter the medical field one day, with nursing being one profession he is interested in pursuing.
