Sports Talk with Charles Tam: ‘MVPat’ joins elite company

In what was a legendary Super Bowl championship between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes further added to his prestigious resume in his young career, solidifying him as one of the greatest of all-time.

Mahomes garnered his second Super Bowl victory and second Super Bowl Most Valuable Player in the Sunday matchup. Just days before, he also won his second league MVP—making him the first player to win the MVP award and Super Bowl in the same season since Kurt Warner in 1999.
In just his sixth season, the 27-year-old is achieving the impossible, sweeping up accolades at an unprecedented pace. Mahomes is currently praised by many to be the undisputed best active player in the world, and has the potential to dethrone Tom Brady as the greatest of all-time.

Already said to be the greatest quarterback talent ever seen, Mahomes looks to surpass quarterback legends Joe Montana and Brady in terms of Super Bowl rings. Mahomes—with two rings in four years—has built the Chiefs into a dynasty the past several years, while Montana and Brady ended their careers with four rings and seven rings apiece, respectively. In wake of his recent success, Mahomes’s career is on track to become one of the most decorated quarterbacks in football history.

However, chasing Brady’s record of seven rings is no easy feat. Brady alone holds more Super Bowl wins than any NFL franchise, collecting his first six rings on the New England Patriots and his last on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The fact that Brady was able to play at the highest level for so long is unheard of. A major factor to his success was his longevity with a 23-year career, and his ability to stay consistent throughout the years. The countless clutch moments, such as the iconic 28-3 Super Bowl comeback against the Atlanta Falcons, allowed him to retire as the GOAT.

As long as Mahomes remains healthy with no significant injuries, he has potential to be next in line to overtake Brady in terms of his legacy. Mahomes undoubtedly has the talent to do so, and the Chiefs’ foundation of an elite coaching staff with a superior supporting cast has him set.

Records are made to be broken, and if there is anyone that can surpass Brady’s record of seven Super Bowl wins, Mahomes is the man.
