In light of their rapid ascent in their first few games of the season, the Diamond Bar High School boys water polo team seems to be upholding their performance as they improve on even more aspects of their gameplay.
The team stands at a 5-3 overall record and a 2-1 league record. Under the guidance of new coach Marco Garcia, the boys have been met with success in their most recent games, adding wins against Rowland and Schurr High School to their preexisting victory against Chino.
However, they did suffer a 22-17 loss to Walnut.
“We just missed a bunch of opportunities,” Garcia said. “I believe in the first quarter alone, we had about seven missed opportunities, easy ones. If we at least convert half of those, the result would’ve been very different.”
In the grand scheme of things, however, the team’s new offense has proved effective, despite flaws in teamwork and subsequent performance.
“During practices, we always work on a lot of shooting, but we’ve been working on a lot of defense recently,” Garcia said. “The Walnut game was 22-17 and no water polo game score should ever be that high, we had terrible defense so next time we won’t have that problem.”
Defense aside, Garcia also provided insight on other aspects of gameplay for the team to improve on, including flaws in their triangular offensive strategy.
“It was working at first, but it seems like we weren’t running it very well,” Garcia said. “Our spacing was really bad during the game, so we had to switch it up. We’re gonna practice with it and hopefully it will all be well.”
The team played their league game at home against Los Altos High School on Wednesday October 4th.
