Putting future team goals in perspective

From the preseason to their first official match with victories across the board, the Diamond Bar girls golf team promises a dominating season ahead.

The Lady Brahmas hit it off with a successful scrimmage win of 197-246 against Glendora on Aug. 22. The team continued to emulate such success, winning the first game of the season 194-245 against Glendora three days later.

Head coach Roberta Garcia attributes this prosperous start of the season to the players’ unwavering dedication to the game.

“A lot of the returning golfers put in the necessary time during the summer, working on improving their scores out on the golf course,” Garcia said via email.

Over a two-week period in June, the team was encouraged to come out for practice. On top of the summer camp, players took it upon themselves to attend weekly lessons or simply practice on the course.

“We had three seniors who were our top three last year and they graduated,” sophomore Peyton Huang said. “I don’t see it as a struggle to get back to where we were, but it’s going to be a bit of a challenge training the new freshmen.”

To get settled into the new season, players have set out several team-bonding activities, including dinners and golf-range practices.

“As a top-six [team], it’s really important for us to have a really good bond,” Huang said. “If we didn’t have a good bond, then the matches wouldn’t be as fun.”

Based on this approach and the evident abundance of skills, Garcia anticipates the team making it to state championships and performing well in the CIF playoffs in November.

Until then, the team’s next match will be against Santa Margarita Catholic High School on Sept. 13.
