Key Club elects new lieutenant governor
After securing a position in Key Club as a freshman, Diamond Bar High School sophomore Marcus Fang has recently been selected to be the next Key Club lieutenant governor for District 35E.
Fang joined Key Club on the first day of club rush, and throughout that year he was encouraged by friends to run for lieutenant governor. He said that he was told by friends that he would be a good fit for the role due to his outgoing and organized personality, which encouraged him to try out.
This did not come easy, as Fang said that he had to run against a student from iPoly High School in Pomona, whom he felt was very worthy for the position. He was elected on Jan. 23.
“I wanted to be elected because I wanted to give back to the community in any way I could,” Fang said via Messenger. “Key Club has made such a profound impact on me and my life so I want to help others get the same experience I did.”
Prior to being elected, Fang was the communications director for the DBHS Key Club and also served as the division event coordinator. He had to send emails to members to inform them about events as communications director. As division event coordinator, he organized a majority of division events as well as finding chaperones for events.
As lieutenant governor, Fang said he hopes to increase the size of Key Club to over 1000 members in the district, as well as organizing more social events for members. He said that he also hopes to create more motivational club videos and have every officer personally reach out to recruit members.
As part of the process to run for the office, he had to create a five-minute speech and then go through four minutes of caucus questioning. In the end, he was elected by delegates from 13 schools, each of which had two voters.
The election process began in late December, when Fang had to submit his term goals. He said that process was extremely nerve wracking since there was uncertainty surrounding how COVID-19 would affect the next school year.
“The role of a lieutenant governor is to service as a liaison between Key Club International and the California-Nevada-Hawaii District to the home clubs and regular members,” Fang said. “I hope to accomplish my goals of 8000 service hours and $5000 raised for PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program).”
Fang’s other responsibilities also include hosting service projects and fundraisers and increasing membership. Additionally, he has to help with Fall Rally South and District Convention, host monthly Division Council Meetings and fill out monthly assignments for district committees.
Fang will be lieutenant governor until April 2022.
