Brahmas defeat Nogales in second league win

In Diamond Bar High School’s second game in the Hacienda League, the Brahmas finished with an impressive  victory against the Nogales Nobles, 28-0.

Both offense and defense performed exceptionally throughout the April 10 game, with the defense forcing and recovering two fumbles by Nogales and Diamond Bar’s junior running back Michael Gorbea scoring two of the team’s four touchdowns.

The Brahmas started off on the right track after the defense recovered a fumble by the Nobles at the 31-yard line. However, Diamond Bar failed to score, turning it over four yards short of the end zone. A series of possession changes followed; a poor punt by Nogales gave DB possession at the 39-yard line, giving the Brahmas the opportunity to capitalize on the misplay as Gorbea scored a four-yard rushing touchdown. A successful PAT that followed put the Brahmas up 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled offensively for most of the period as each team’s defense read every play. Nonetheless, Gorbea put an end to the scoreless first nine minutes with a 25-yard rushing touchdown. Along with a successful PAT, the lead extended to 14-0 in favor of Diamond Bar.

At the start of the second half, the Brahmas displayed dominance with major contributions from both offensive and defensive ends of the field. From a start at the 38-yard line, Diamond Bar made multiple successful drives that led to a one-yard rushing touchdown by senior Daniel Solis. On the ensuing possession, the Brahma defense forced a fumble, recovering  it at the 50-yard line. To cap off the momentum gain, sophomore quarterback Maddox Bernardino threw a 33-yard pass for a touchdown.

The rest of the game was scoreless with back-and-forth turnovers between both teams, ending the matchup in a 28-0 win for Diamond Bar.

The Brahmas now have a 2-0 record in the Hacienda League and a 3-1 overall record. Their previous wins were against Rowland and Ontario, with their only loss coming from Santa Ana. They look to continue their two-game win streak into the annual Branding Iron game against Walnut on Friday, which will be their last game of the season.
