Davies Resigns as DB Athletic Director

Diamond Bar High School’s Athletic Department received more shocking news days after the school year ended. With the DB Athletics program moving into the new Palomares League, Kurt Davies decided it was time to resign from his position as the Athletics Director after being on the job for five years.

“The decision was something I was thinking about since last summer. I was gone from home almost every day of the week due to the amount of work that had to be done. This choice was always in the back of my head,” Davies said.

Before Davies was announced the AD in 2009, the DB Athletics program was sub-par compared to those of other schools in the Hacienda League. Only a couple varsity teams were able to make the CIF playoffs. However when Davies stepped in, things took a turn for each athletic team. After numerous coaching changes, success was around the corner for the athletics program. In the 2013-14 school year, every varsity team had made it to the CIF playoffs and a handful of them even competed in the State playoffs.

However, Davies’ greatest impact on the school came off the field and the court. Prior to 2009, about 800 students competed in the DB sports program. But he wanted to create a different kind of atmosphere for the athletic program. By increasing the opportunities and teams for students to participate in, Davies made sports a bigger part of DB life. This past year, approximate 1100 student-athletes competed on a team.

“Wins and losses are nice, but a student only has four years to be a high school athlete. I really encouraged everyone to be a part of the Athletics program. Getting over 300 kids out to enjoy their high school career, is something that I am proud of,” Davies commented.

Although he will no longer be the school’s athletic director, Davies will continue to teach at DBHS. His replacement has not yet been selected.

This was not the first resignation of the year that occurred in the DB Athletics program. In early February, former head football coach Ryan Maine also resigned from the school so that he could take a job at Santiago High School, where he will be offensive coordinator.

“We wish Kurt luck as he transitions out of the AD position. He feels fortunate to have been a small part of all of our team and individual successes over the last five years and has an incredible amount of respect for our coaching staff. We wish nothing but the best as he transitions back to the classroom. Brahma Athletics are in a great place as we enter the Palomares League and we look forward to future successes,” Principal Catherine Real said via an email to the faculty members.
