As summer break rapidly approaches, most Diamond Bar High School students are ecstatic for the three months of rest and relaxation. Without the constant stress of school, students are free to set out to accomplish their personal goals. Some of these students have very ambitious summer plans.

For junior William Loo, the summer will mean working, as Loo will intern at the Boeing Corporation this summer.

Loo plans to pursue a job in the engineering field in the future and hopes that this internship will give him more experience.

“I applied because I hoped to find a way to apply my current toolkit of engineering knowledge to something that matters, while gaining more experience in the process,”  Loo said via Facebook.

Juniors in the DBHS Brahma Tech program are required to register for an internship over the summer. Workshops provided by the school covered the steps in creating a professional application.

“I hope this internship will give me a glimpse into what working in a large corporation is like, along with the hope that I can contribute actively to the development process by constantly bringing in fresh ideas for the innovative process,” Loo said.

Other students are looking to make a difference in the world by spending their summer break volunteering. Junior Bryan Dong plans to travel to Thailand and Burma in hopes of helping the underprivileged.

“We’ll be spending most our time in rural areas, specifically areas that have been disenfranchised by each respective government. I will then be studying the social, political, and economic needs of these people,”  Dong said via Facebook.

Traveling with about 20 other people, Dong and his team will visit the capitals of both countries. They hope to learn why certain areas are ignored by the government and plan to raise the issues with local leaders.

“I hope to better understand politically inflicted poverty based on marginalization, and receive a more global view that would enrich my perspective as to what I want to do with my life.”

On the other hand, sophomore Anne Shen plans on using her summer break for relaxation and exploration. She plans to visit Vancouver with her mom and meet a friend she met online.

After creating a Instagram fan account for a celebrity, Shen caught the attention of another fan. After commenting on each other’s pictures, the two began talking and discovered that they had various common interests.

Since then, the duo have talked on the phone numerous times. And agreed that they would meet up.

“I’m pretty excited to meet her in real life. She’s about the same age as me, and I think it’ll be really fun,” Shen said.

Other than meeting up with her friend, Shen plans to spend her time in Vancouver going on a cruise, trying new types of foods, and unwinding with her mom.

“I can’t wait to unstress, I’m really looking forward to this summer.”
